What do you think of the great role of “Renaissance” in the historical course of human?
M:
The Renaissance was a Key point in cultural and art improvement of human history. The man was the center and all arts expanded and exploded as a big bang starting from the human being. There are many famous Renaissance artists, but the most representative from my pint of view was Leonardo Da Vinci ho was not only and artist but an engineer and a scientist too. In his works, not only paintings but especially his 6000 manuscripts that are the base of my study,we demonstrated that the study and the sciences can help arts to become better and better and for the fist time he domesticated also that art can help also the study and the development and knowledge of science.His studies of the human body and technology are powerful because they are shown with the use of art as never seen before. He was the first designer of the world, mixing art and technology at the service of the human beings.

How do you understand the “New Renaissance”?
M:
Today technology and marketing are becoming too fast and too much powerful. I think that today man are used by technology and marketing and the human being is no more at the center, only businesses and technology is the center of everything. A“new Renaissance” can balance the world we are lining in, and can try to reverse this bad dream of humans being used by technology.Art, culture and education can change the games and people can begin to use technology and not being used. We have to put again the man in the center and as renascence did with arts and beauty as a key to the process.
YAM:
As a researcher about Da Vinci, did he really leave us a “secret code”? What findings can you share with us in your research?
M:
Leonardo da Vinci is not only the Mona Lisa, I discovered that in his thousands manuscripts there are much more secrets we can imagine. In each of his manuscripts we can find fusion of art and technology, using nature as a machine of inspiration. At the beginning I trusted books and expositions and I believed Leonardo invented thing like the parachute, the helicopter and the tank, but after a long study I find that this is not true, Leonardo studied a Lot and copied a lot also, this is the key to learn: study the past. After he studied a lot he began to invent new things and in each one of the thousands of manuscripts I find new ideas and principles. Butthe key that connect all these studies is the observations of the nature and the idea that you never stop learning things, also if you think you reached a high level of knowledge there will be always a lot of more to study and to learn, and you have never surrender also if you make mistakes.

What did you learn from the 《Codex Atlanticus 1r》?
M:
Codex Atlanticus 1r, is just an example of the study of Leonardo. This page is one of the thousands with real projects of Leonardo, this is not a famous machine, also because was never been studied and understood. This is because Leonardo did not write any explanation too. This machine is the “evolution” of the tank project. The famous tank of Leonardo, you can find in all museum and books is not an original idea of Leonardo, he copied it from Valturio and sold the beautiful paper to the duke of Milan. Than, after he copied and studied the medieval project, he understood this project cannot work properly and so he studied it and changed the mechanisms to make a real giant war machine much more efficient than the fake one everybody knows. The problem is that the engine in the middle is not easy to understand.The only way to understand a project, really understand it, is to copy it and make it better.As Leonardo did, copying and studying other technology, I did the same. I studied it and copied it in a bigger drawing. When You copy a machine and a mechanism you must understand it, and the knowledge process takes time, is not a fast work. Today with internet there is a “false and“bad” myth of fast learning and fast doing, but it is not true. The video I make of me coping and improving the design of Leonardo is very long, the meaning I want to transfer is that you need time to learn and to design. The more time you put in learning and design the more you learn and the better you become. Exactly as Leonardo did to become Leonardo Da Vinci.

What is Esovalva?
M:
Esovalva is one of my art creatures I “paint” using digital tools. But instead of having “one paint” I decided to create this “animal” from it’s DNA, a digital DNA. So that I “paint” a digital live form , able to “live” inside the computer.
Esovalva is an ambitious project. What distinguishes a living creature from a creation of the mind?Quite often the work of the mind, even if thinner and more perfect, has no history, it floats like a never born archetype in our imagination, until it is crafted by a motion of the will, which we commonly refer to as inspiration.Esovalva transcends inspiration, claiming its self-assertion on the strength of the following evolutional process. From a larval status, halfway between insects and fish, Esovalva is born thanks to a mitotic segmentation similar to a mammalian embryo. From now on this creature can have its place into reality, born as it was into the unreal world of simulation. Esovalva can have a tridimensional look by using the appropriate glasses, it can be reproduced and put on a pedestal to be easily observed, studied, cataloged and dismembered according to the rules of biological and natural research.

How do you view the role of AI in current and future life?
M:
Today AI is 90% just marketing, all companies and media are talking about AI but they use only the world as a fashion thing. Today to sell a product it “must” contain Artificial Intelligence. The true AI is a work in progress very hard work, machine learning and advanced programming today can use technology that reached enough power to look like “Intelligent”. The scientific true is much more complex and all can change depending on the meaning we want to give to the world “Intelligence”. What is the “Intelligence” and how we can “measure”it? Today even the simplest animal is much more “Intelligence” than the most advanced computer. But we are in a good way, today technology is enough powerful to experiment for the first time something we can call “Artificial Intelligence. The AI can be used in all kind of works and tools.
AI can be used in science and technology to improve machine and objects and for sure this is the future. But we must careful. As an example I can say that we are close to produce thinks like a washing machine with AI, it will be very nice and it will sell a lot in the market, but we must be very careful because the AI washing machine we will pay a lot of money will be able to “use us, the AI will decide to buy more branded washing powder… using our credit card. It will use us!
The only way to avoid this is to become more “intelligent” and smart than AI and to put the human being in the middle not the machines.
I decided to apply AI to arts and to create Neoart3 in this way.I create Artificial DNA in forms, animals and architectures that can evolve inside my computer.I Think AI can be used in Arts too and in the Neo Renaissance arts too.

Do these “system creatures” you create really grow on their own? Will they get sick and die?
M:
My digital creatures, really grow and evolve, but with my instructions and creativity vision. I will decide where the go and how they grow because I program them. All AI system at the end are human programs that do as they “master” program them. They are alive? They can really grow? And they can die? To be able to answer this question we must first do something very hard. We must give a definition of “life, what really means “grow and die”? In nature you can give different answer to this questions. And humans ere still fighting because in our planet people give different meanings to the world “live, grow and die. Think also that from a point of view of molecules, none really dies because a dead animal body is used by nature to grow plants and other animals… so it is very hard to define “life” real “life”. What about artificial life? It is life? For sure is not like our life and we cannot use some principles of reality in the digital world. Let’s imagine in the future one very powerful computer that gives “birth”to an AI creature as in the movies. If it will be really intelligent, it will not care about die or live because if you will turn power off, it will not suffer or die, and as soon as you switch the computer on, it will start to live again,Time for AI and digital creature does not have sense they will “live” forever and they will never really die.That is why I use Art and AI together, because it is very fascinating and I know that when I will die, my creatures will not. Neoart3 will live forever.

M:文艺复兴是人类历史上文化和艺术发展的关键时期。这一时期主张以人为中心,所以,一切艺术都以人,尤其是个人的兴趣、价值观和尊严作为出发点,以大爆炸的形式展开。文艺复兴时期有许多著名的艺术家,但在我看来,最有代表性的就是列奥纳多达芬奇,他不仅是艺术家,还是军事工程师和科学家。达芬奇不仅仅是在绘画领域有着显著的成就,还留下了6000份手稿。我基于他的这些手稿进行了研究,发现研究和科技可以帮助艺术变得越来越好,而艺术也有益于研究和科技的发展。达芬奇对人体和技术的研究十分透彻。他将人体和技术以艺术的形式展现出来,这在当时来说是前所未有的。他是世界上第一位把艺术和技术融合在一起的设计师。
您如何理解“新文艺复兴”?
M:如今,技术的发展和市场营销瞬息万变、影响宽广。 我认为,今天的人类被技术和市场主导,人类不再是中心,商业和技术才是一切的中心。 而“新文艺复兴”能够平衡我们当前所处的世界,很可能会扭转人类被科技主导的这一噩梦。艺术、文化和教育可以改变游戏规则,人们可以开始使用技术,而不是被技术主导。 我们必须再次把人放在中心,关键是要将文艺复兴。
